San Francisco Street Score 2015 - Annual Report Card on Walking

July 2, 2015

Walk San Francisco released the first comprehensive review of San Francisco’s progress towards improving pedestrian safety and walkability in San Francisco. The Street Score 2015: Annual Report Card on Walking analyzes the City’s progress on the 2013 Pedestrian Strategy metrics and gives recommendations for the City to make San Francisco streets safer for everyone.

This report includes the 2014 goals and outcomes for the following categories:

  •  Pedestrian injury data
  •  Designing a realistic and safe roadway system
  •  Collecting data about dangerous traffic behaviors to prioritize traffic safety
  •  Hosting education events related to walking and traffic safety
  •  Adopting legislation
  •  Monitoring the progress of all the goals

While the 2014 goal for severe and pedestrian injuries according to the Pedestrian Strategy was 82, there were actually 96 who suffered tragic injuries; furthermore, whereas the national average for proportion of traffic deaths that involve pedestrians is 14%, 61% of traffic deaths in San Francisco involved pedestrians. There are still many steps to take for San Francisco to become a more walkable city. This would require not only strong support from the community and strong political leadership, but also the continuation of building greener streets and ensuring the implementation of Vision Zero.
