Step it Up! Help Make Our Communities Walkable

September 25, 2015

Regular physical activity can improve our health and quality of life. However, many people across the United States do not get enough physical activity to realize these benefits. Promoting walking offers a powerful public health strategy to increase physical activity.

In this newly released report, the U.S. Surgeon General calls on Americans to make walking a national priority. The report list five goals to improve walking and walkability, in which communities need to be designed to make walking safer and easier; programs and policies need to be available to support and encourage walking; research gaps need to be address; and individuals and families need to support each other to become and stay active.

Goals

  • Make Walking a National Priority
  • Design Communities that Make It Safe and Easy to walk for people of all ages and abilities
  • Promote Programs and Policies to Support Walking Where People Live, Learn, Work and Play
  • Provide information to Encourage Walking and Improve Walkability
  • Fill Surveillance, Research, and Evaluation Gaps Related to Walking and Walkability

Let’s all step it up and help make our communities more walkable!
