New GHSA report documents highest number of pedestrian fatalities since 1981

According to a newly released report from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), 7,508 people walking were killed by drivers in the United States in 2022, the highest number of pedestrian fatalities since 1981.

Pedestrian and bicycle counts are often required for transportation models, to determine capacity and to assess the attractiveness of a streetscape to non-motorized users. By counting them, it is possible to demonstrate their significance as road users in allocating resources for improvements. Counts can also serve as benchmarks for evaluations of safety enhancements.

In 2021, 4,285 people were killed on California roads, or nearly 12 people every day. These losses are not just numbers, but our children, parents, friends, family, and neighbors. This is a public health crisis that deserves more attention, and more urgency. All people, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, age or ability, deserve to move safely in their community, whether they are walking, biking, rolling, driving or taking public transportation.
