Streamlining CEQA to Improve Transportation

CEQA has mandated protocols to require mitigation of environmental impacts for development projects, but has inhibited the construction of transportation infrastructure at the same time. In the face of COVID-19, a new senate bill (SB288) aims to streamline the process of new transportation projects meant to lessen economic strain and create more equitable transportation systems as the economy reopens. What Does COVID-19 Mean for Transportation and Mobility feat. Survey Data

Researchers at UC Davis conducted a survey on how COVID-19 affected respondents' travel behavior, work activities, and household organization. There will a discussion providing highlights from the survey with 10,000 respondents. Other topics analyzed by the survey includes mode choice, vehicle purchase intentions, adoption of telecommuting, and delivery services. There will be a focus on implications for the climate and for communities.

 The Human Trafficking Tie to Transportation

Human traffickers are using resources within the transportation sector to exploit victims for their profit. Transportation is also a way out for many survivors. This webinar will be exploring research-based data, survivor-informed messaging, practical ways to identify potential incidents, what to safely do with what you observe, and how to encourage others to join the fight to end modern day slavery. It is a topic not often discussed in transportation and the webinar will provide an understand of how human trafficking and transportation is related. The training webinar is directed to broad safety audience, including law enforcement, planners, transportation professionals, and elected officials among others. The presenters include Kristen Joyner (South West Transit Association) and Chief David Lorenzen (Iowa DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement)

The sharp decline ridership caused by COVID-19 has drastically decreased revenue for public transit systems. This has forced operators to reduce the operation of their services. SPUR and AECOM convened transit agencies and advocated throughout the Bay Area to discuss recovery of the region's transit ecosystem. In this webinar, they will be sharing the results of the workshop. Some of the recommendations include amending the transit funding, legislation, and the existing transit network.

Research and Innovation on Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon Operations and Safety in Arizona

The Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) is a special pedestrian crossing device installed for crossing conditions where increased visibility and something more than a flasher is needed. The PHB was first included in the 2009 edition of the MUTCD, but some of the early applications in Arizona date back to 2000 on an experimental basis. Since Arizona was the first to install PHBs, the 20-year crash history for PHBs provides opportunity to evaluate their long-term safety effectiveness for pedestrians and other road users. This webinar will highlight the largest US based research study on the safety effectiveness of PHBs, conducted for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
