Tune in for active transportation webinars in June!

Observed annually in June by the National Safety Council, National Safety Month focuses on reducing leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities. In concert to this month’s theme of safety, we compiled a list of upcoming webinars around safe walkability and bikeability. How do we redesign places that put people first? How do we create safe spaces for all community members? Tune in for a month of exciting and informative webinars held by a number of organizations across the U.S. A brief description and registration link are included below. America Walks is hosting a webinar that explores the benefits when we take steps to build walkable and liveable communities for all ages. Attendees will learn about the economic and financial power of walkable communities, and how to use this information to create safe, accessible, and enjoyable places to walk and be physically active.   2. Engaging Students with Disabilities in Safe Routes to Schoolby Safe Routes to School National Partnership

    Description: One of Safe Routes to School's core principles is equity. The organization is hosting a free webinar that centers around policy, practice, and discourse towards the inclusion of students with disabilities in Safe Routes to School. The panel features educators and advocates who are devoted to achieving equity for children with disabilities and students of all ability levels. 

  3. Roundabouts That Work for Cyclists and Pedestrians by Association of Pedestrian & Bicycle Professionals

    Description: The first part of this webinar will provide a summary of current and potential design best practices for bicycles at roundabouts using domestic and international examples, and provide an overview of the available guidance available for practitioners designing or reviewing roundabouts for cyclists. The second half of the webinar will focus on pedestrians at roundabouts, with a discussion of the most recent research efforts which led to the development of NCHRP Report 834. NCHRP Project 834 presents guidance for the application of crossing solutions at roundabouts for pedestrians with vision disabilities. 

  4. Walkable Transformations: Healthy, Active, and Engaged Communities by America Walks

    Description: This webinar features a panel of three speakers who have done work to create healthy, active, and engaging places that put people first. Attendees will learn how other communities are addressing obstacles to walkability and explore ways to promote and support walkability across the U.S.

  5. Resources to Improve Health and Promote Active Transportation by American Public Health Association

    Description: American Public Health Association (APHA)'s webinar will focus on active transportation, and the importance of fostering environments that support physical activity and health equity. Attendees will learn about the 2018 Benchmarking Report on Bicycling and Walking in the U.S., a study on trail accessibility in Milwaukee, as well as testimonies from the Planners4Health initiative. 
  6. Making Strides 2018: A Look at Out State Report Cards by Safe Routes to School National Partnership

    Description: Learn about Safe Routes to School National Partnership's 2018 State Report Cards on Support for Walking, Bicycling, and Active Kids and Communities. In this webinar, attendees will learn more about the report cards, the changes since the last state report cards in 2016 and how to use them to inspire action that creates places supportive of healthy, active children and communities. The speakers feature staff from the National Partnership.
