New Safety Stories highlight how communities are prioritizing safer, more accessible streets for all people

Explore our newest installments in the Stories From the Field Series to learn how people on the frontline are improving road safety for people who walk, bike, and roll in their communities! In our latest Safety Stories, the SafeTREC team spoke with Ariel Williams-Lewis from the National Health Foundation, Haleema Bharoocha from the Anti Police-Terror Project, and Tonya Love from the office of Oakland councilmember Carroll Fife. Their stories highlight their work in active transportation safety, including the key elements and valuable takeaways that they learned while creating successful transportation projects.

Ariel Williams-Lewis, program manager of the Community and Youth Engagement program at the National Health Foundation (NHF) emphasizes the importance of creating and supporting communities that center individuals who walk, bike, and roll in order to have safer streets for all.

Haleema Bharoocha, transportation safety consultant at the Anti Police-Terror Project (APTP), and Tanya Love, chief of staff to Oakland councilmember Carroll Fife, share how traffic fatalities in Oakland catalyzed their work to create a pilot Community Traffic Safety Program, where community centers can apply to create traffic safety treatments and calming zones on their streets.
