MTI Presents: Artificial Intelligence for Real-Time Traffic Vision, Detection, Tracking, and Counting

Host: Mineta Transportation Institute

Feb. 10, 2022 | 10am PT | Register

Traffic fatalities, which are on the rise, leave pedestrians and bicyclists highly vulnerable. Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered systems that monitor and manage traffic flow can significantly improve safety for everyone. Until recently, there was no effective automated system for monitoring the movement of vulnerable road users. MTI funded research contributed to the development and implementation of an accurate, real-time, and automatic system based on Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision to monitor, detect, track, count, and manage traffic elements like pedestrians, bicyclists, cars, and more. This cost-effective system does NOT require installing new cameras. Instead, the system has been trained on videos captured from existing traffic cameras in Los Angeles. The results demonstrate more than 97% accuracy in pedestrian counting. In this meeting, we will present the system’s features and capabilities.

Expanding Our Reach: The Role of State Highway Safety Offices in the Safe System Approach

The panelists will share perspectives on how SHSOs can welcome more community involvement in safety planning and implement projects in more diverse communities. Finally, panelists will consider how SHSOs can lead from where they are and promote the Safe System approach among peer stakeholders.

On the Edge-New Applications and Safety Outcomes of Edge Lane Roads

Host: Transportation Research Board

Feb. 15, 2022 | 11am PT | Register

Edge lane roads (ELR), also known as advisory bike lanes, are shared streets in which two-way traffic shared a single center lane, and edge lanes on either side are generally reserved for vulnerable road users. TRB will host a webinar on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 from 2:00-3:30 PM Eastern that will present safety applications of ELRs. These applications include their potential use as a town’s main street, as an on-street connector for a shared use trail, and as a countermeasure for road-departure crashes on low-volume roads. Presenters will discuss research that explore the safety of ELRs versus that of standard two-lane roads.

Accommodating Active Transportation Through Work Zones

Host: Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals

Feb. 16, 2022 | 12pm PT | Register

Safety and comfort for a broad range of people are a few of the guiding principles for bikeway planning and design. When construction near a bikeway happens, a typical default approach can be to close the bicycle facility and merge people on bicycles into traffic. While this may be ok for the most confident of people on bicycles, it doesn't serve all bicycle user profiles. Accommodating people on bikes through work zones requires a decision-making process and criteria that serve all levels of bicyclist comfort. This webinar will walk through a flow of alternatives work zone designers should consider for accommodating people on bikes while they are developing the staging and management of a work zone. Special considerations such as existing major barrier crossing closures will be examined, as well as the need for notification, engagement, and signage.

Fee: $50 members / $85 nonmembers

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Safe System Pilot Application

Sponsor: FHWA

FHWA is seeking agencies to participate in a Safe System pilot project as part of a larger effort to identify Safe System solutions for highway safety improvement projects. FHWA envisions the pilot to be similar to a road safety assessment, but through a Safe System lens. The pilot project could be a review of an existing or proposed project, or also include a review of agencies policies and procedures with a Safe System lens. If selected, FHWA will work with the host agency to assemble a review team, develop and host a workshop, lead project review, prepare recommendations report, and develop case study.

To submit a proposed pilot project, please complete the application by February 11, 2022. FHWA will review the applications and select up to eight (8) Safe System pilot projects. FHWA anticipates notifying successful applicants at the beginning of March and begin scheduling the pilots immediately thereafter. Learn more and submit.
