Caltrans Releases New SHSP Crash Data Dashboard

February 28, 2022

As part of their 2020-2024 California Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP), Caltrans recently launched the California SHSP Crash Data Dashboard. The new dashboard provides SHSP stakeholders such as state, tribal, local and community-based traffic safety partners with direct access to crash data to help them create data-driven plans and strategies for reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

SHSP Crash Data Dashboard

The SHSP Crash Data Dashboard is supported by crash data from both the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). For those navigating the dashboard, they can filter the number and characteristics of fatal and serious injury crashes over the last 10 years through various filtering options like:

  • SHSP Challenge Area
  • Crash Severity
  • Location: District, County, Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)
  • City, Crash Cause, Crash Time or Crash Party and Victim Demographics

2020-2024 SHSP

Caltrans also created the 2021 SHSP Traffic Safety Facts to complement the dashboard. The series of fact sheets provides statewide and challenge area crash data, with a focus on key issues, including equity-related data. These resources are driven by Caltrans four guiding principles for the 2020-2024 plan: Integrate Equity, Double Down on What Works, Accelerate Advanced Technology, and Implement a Safe System Approach.
