Today's guest post is from Lisa Peterson, Communications Manager for UC Berkeley's Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC). This post was originally posted on December 16, 2022.
UC Berkeley SafeTREC and California Walks are excited to announce applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) and the Comunidades Activas y Seguras (CAyS) Programs!
This year, we will partner with communities across California to discuss, plan, and implement active transportation safety improvements and projects. We will work with each community to identify how a pedestrian and bicycle safety workshop fits into their current needs and goals, especially as pedestrian deaths reached a 40-year high nationally in 2021.
About the programs
The CPBST and CAyS programs work with local residents, schools, agencies, and other safety partners to develop a community-driven action plan to improve walking and biking safety. Both programs use an adapted Safe System approach that engages communities as the experts and strengthens collaboration between transportation professionals and communities to create lasting traffic safety and mobility improvements.
Both programs strive for equitable engagement and accessibility. Program staff will work with local communities to determine if workshops will be offered in-person or online, pursuant to public health guidance.
Which program is right for me?
The CPBST is our original pedestrian and bicycle safety training, and features a Safe System overview, walk/bike assessment, crash data review, and action planning activity. This training curriculum has been presented in Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. Interpretation and translation are available in those languages and others as requested.
The CAyS program is our Spanish-language pedestrian and bicycle safety training that provides a culturally and linguistically competent curriculum to the communities we work alongside. In addition to the CPBST curriculum, CAyS also includes a RadioNovela activity and cohort-style meetings to support communities as they engage with active transportation advocacy work.
Interested in bringing a workshop to your community?
We are currently seeking ten new communities to partner with us to make their communities safer for walking and biking. We prioritize working in communities that are at higher risk for road traffic injuries and addressing the safety needs of people who are underserved by traditional transportation planning and resources.

Follow-up support for former CPBST & CAyS communities
UC Berkeley SafeTREC and California Walks are happy to announce follow-up technical assistance support for past Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) and the Comunidades Activas y Seguras (CAyS) communities.
Peer Exchange Series: My community is energized about pedestrian and bicycle safety! Where do we go from here?
Once again, we are proud to host our three-part Peer Exchange program this upcoming year! The series supports communities as they work to implement pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety programming and improvements. The first session, “Funding pedestrian and bicycle safety: developing and managing grants,” will cover raising funds to support safety programming and improvements. We look forward to seeing you in the new year at our first Peer Exchange on Wednesday, January 18, 2023! Register here.

Technical Assistance Program
Follow-up support is available to all former CPBST sites to support their community’s implementation of programs, projects, and recommendations outlined in their community action plan. This year, we will partner with communities in two overarching areas: strengthening data-driven narratives and community leadership & capacity strengthening.
We are currently seeking five communities to partner with us. To inquire about follow-up support, please contact Kristen Leckie at kristenmleckie@berkeley.edu

Regional Active Transportation Technical Assistance
In 2021, the Federal Highway Administration identified California as a Focus State and the six metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) as Focus Area Regions/MPOs for prioritizing resources to reduce fatal pedestrian and bicycle crashes.
If you live in El Dorado, Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Joaquin, Sutter, Ventura, Yolo, or Yuba counties, we are eager to collaborate with you through our Focus Regions program. We are seeking to provide technical assistance to three communities from the named counties. To inquire about support opportunities, contact Garrett Fortin at fortinga@berkeley.edu
