Each year, the League opens applications in the spring and fall to honor the communities, businesses and universities that have created bicycle-friendly spaces across the country. There are five levels awardees can apply for - diamond, platinum, gold, silver and bronze. The program outlines clear guidelines for each level, which allows communities to continue to improve and upgrade their level.
Applications are most successful when they can demonstrate their work across the Five E’s - Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), engineering, education, encouragement, and engineering and planning. For local governments, businesses, universities, advocates and residents who plan to submit applications, you can access resources to aid your process at https://bikeleague.org/content/bfa-resources.
Awardees receive incentives, hands-on assistance and recognition for their work to create safe accommodations for those biking and their continued encouragement for community members to bike, both as a means for everyday transportation and recreational riding.
If you’d like to apply as a community, business or university, visit bikeleague.org/community to learn more about the program and start your application today through the BFA portal.
