The California E-bike Incentive Project, funded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), launched on December 18 to provide eligible Californians up to $2,000 towards the purchase of a new e-bike.
The California E-bike Incentive Project launched in partnership with over 20 community-based organizations that will do outreach and provide application assistance. Applicants are eligible if they are California residents 18 years and older, have a qualifying household income of 300% of the Federal Poverty Level or less, and apply through the California E-Bike Incentive Project website.
Once approved, income-eligible individuals can redeem the voucher from preapproved retailers at the point of purchase. A rider safety video is provided and required before collecting the voucher.
According to the California E-bike Incentive Project website, e-bikes must fit the following requirements: "New class 1-3 UL and/or EN compliant electric bikes with a motor of less than or equal to 750 watts, operable pedals and battery integrated front lights. Eligible e-bikes must have a minimum one-year manufacturer warranty and be fully assembled. E-bikes may only be purchased at approved brick and mortar stores and online retailers." The incentive can also be used towards purchases of e-bike related accessories, including but not limited to helmets, bike locks, baskets, and reflective clothing.
The first round of applications opened on December 18, 2024 at 6 p.m. PST and has closed. For more information on the program and when additional application windows will open, visit the California E-bike Incentive Project website
