2026's National Bike Month is officially underway!
During the month of May, communities and bicycle advocacy organizations across America are celebrating National Bike Month and holding events to encourage biking during the month of May and beyond. Whether you’re an experienced bicyclist, need a quick refresher, or are considering bicycling for the first time, we have resources to get you rolling.
At UC Berkeley SafeTREC, we encourage staff and student workers to use active transportation throughout May and all year long — whether walking, biking, or taking public transit. Postdoctoral Researcher Sujin Lee regularly walks to work because of the ease and health benefits, compared to driving. "I walk to work because it's a walkable distance for me and also doubles as daily exercise," Lee says. "The route from my home to the office is pretty safe, and I really enjoy seeing the flowers that people have planted in front of their houses."
Meanwhile, Communications Coordinator Karen Nguyen Vo rides a bicycle or takes public transit to work, in lieu of driving. "I grew up in a suburban city that was very car-centric, so it has been a game-changer to work and live in a city that caters more towards public transit users, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Being able to use my bicycle and my own two feet to go to work, run errands, exercise, and explore the Bay Area has impacted my life in so many positive ways."
Whether you ride a bicycle every day or are just looking to start, we have gathered resources from the League of American Bicyclists, California Office of Traffic Safety, and more to guide you and your community towards biking as a sustainable mode of active transportation.
