New Safety Stories focus on complete streets, equity, and prioritizing action transportation safety during COVID-19

In the last decade, micromobility ridership, or the use of personal transportation devices like bicycles, scooters and other small devices, has seen increasing growth. According to the latest data from the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), since 2010 people in the United States have taken 342 million trips on shared bikes and scooters. In 2019 alone, there was a 60% increase in trips from the previous year with 136 million trips on shared bikes, e-bikes and scooters. 

The project application deadline for the Active Transportation Program (ATP) Cycle 5 is September 15, 2020!

CATSIP is home to a number of resources that support active transportation safety in California. As the newest addition, we would like to introduce a section on "Micromobility" found under the "Resources" tab. It features content in the following categories -- Statistics and Trends, Emerging Research & Technology, Permits Programs & Best Practices, and Micromobility Policies by City. 

Due to the nature of COVID-19, there has been an increased demand for safe public spaces as people continue to make trips for essential services. In order to make this possible, communities have implemented new policies that adapt to current needs. 

May is Bicycle Safety Month and the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) is encouraging those out walking, driving or riding their bikes to look out for one another while practicing social distancing measures.

New Safety Stories highlight how communities are prioritizing action transportation safety

The ATP Cycle 5 Call-for-Projects is now open as of March 25th. The application deadline is set for June 15th, 2020. 

According to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. during the 10-year period from 2009 to 2018 has increased by 53% (from 4,109 deaths in 2009 to 6,283 deaths in 2018). At the same time, while walking has become riskier, the number of all other traffic fatalities has increased by only 2%.

Register now for an upcoming Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) this month in a community near you to identify priorities to make walking and biking safer for everyone - including seniors, students, parents, and people with disabilities!

Mark your calendars for an upcoming 2021 Active Transportation Program (ATP) Workshop! The California Transportation Commission (CTC) is hosting a series of workshops throughout the state to provide more information on the ATP Cycle 5 grant application process, procedures and key deadlines. Workshops are available to attend in person or by teleconference. City and tribal governments, local agencies, and the public are encouraged to attend.

Cities have recently seen the rise of new options for personal transportation - or "micromobility" - that include devices that are typically low speed, often lightweight, and partially or fully motorized (Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) 2019; Society of Automotive Engineers, 2019). In order to provide context and insights into their application, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) has released two new resources worth exploring:
