The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), in partnership with the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) at University of California, Berkeley will co-host the 2017 California Transportation Planning Conference, Partnering for Sustainable Transportation on May 3 - 5, 2017.

Madera County Transportation Commission will be hosting a roundtable meeting and workshop on Thursday, March 9 to gather input on the amendments to the 2014 Madera County Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Stategy RTP/SCS update.

TRB’s recently published Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2587 consists of 17 papers that explore issues related to bicycles and motorcycles, including:

Caltrans is developing a Bicycle Plan for the Bay Area district to improve bicycling on and across the State-owned transportation network.

Caltrans has recently released “Toward an Active California,” the Draft California State Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The public is invited to provide comments (by March 1st) through their online comment tool or by attending an upcoming meetings/webinar. Caltrans will be hosting four meetings across the state from February 23- March 1, 2017. 

Beginning December 5, 2016, the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS)will start accepting online applications for grants scheduled to start on October 1, 2017. OTS will launch a new electronic grant system GEMS (Grant Electronic Management System).

National Walk to School Day is observed annually in the first week of October. This day brings together students, school administration and staff, parents and the community to celebrate the value of walking to school. Please join us in walking to campus, your school or anywhere else to improve physical health and highlight the need for improvements to create safer spaces for students that walk to school.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2017 Lifesavers National Conference on Highway Safety Priorities Traffic Safety Scholars Program (TSS). The TSS Program provides awards of up to $1,000 to help full and part-time undergraduate and graduate students defray the cost of attending the nation's largest gathering of traffic safety professionals March 26-28 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  
Scholarship Amount: up to $1,000
Application deadline is November 18, 2016.

SEPTEMBER IS DECLARED CALIFORNIA PEDESTRIAN SAFETY MONTH

In answer to rapidly increasing numbers of pedestrians being killed and injured on California roadways, the California State Senate has passed a resolution declaring September as “California Pedestrian Safety Month.” 

We routinely update our Bicycle Master Plans page  and Pedestrian/Bicycle Master Plans page to provide city/county updates.

BERKELEY BICYCLE PLAN:

Viva CalleSJ is back again this year! Similar to last year, miles of San Jose streets will be close for community members to enjoy walking, biking, skating and exploring the city.  This year's event, From the West: Glen Meets Zen, will open six miles of  San Jose streets, including Japantown, Willow Glen, Burbank and Downtown, for people to come out and play for the day!
