As part of their 2020-2024 California Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP), Caltrans recently launched the California SHSP Crash Data Dashboard. The new dashboard provides SHSP stakeholders such as state, tribal, local and community-based traffic safety partners with direct access to crash data to help them create data-driven plans and strategies for reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

The newest addition to CATSIP is our updated and refreshed Guides and Toolkits page, which now features resources by one of three topic areas: Bike and Pedestrian Projects, Outreach and Engagement, and Safe Routes to School. These guides and toolkits come from both agencies and community organizations and were developed to promote safe walking and biking facilities. You can find the updated Guides and Toolkits page under our “Resources” tab.

The newest addition to CATSIP is our Safe System Approach to Road Safety resource page which features background on the approach, its principles, elements, and resources both within the United States and internationally. You can find our new Safe System page under our “Resources” tab. 

The UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) is offering free Complete Streets Safety Assessments (CSSAs) to California communities, including cities, counties, and school campuses with a population of over 2,500 people. CSSAs are comprehensive transportation safety assessments that focus on pedestrian and bicycle safety.

Join the celebration and walk to school on National Walk to School Day.

On Wednesday, October 6, schools across the United States will celebrate National Walk to School Day. Registration is now open and anyone is welcome to join! You can register schools, neighborhoods or families to pledge to walk to school so you can celebrate in the safest way possible under your current public health guidelines. 

Accessing crash data plays an important role in assessing the safety needs and concerns for people walking and biking in our communities. To support those working to advance pedestirian and bicycle safety, we have recently updated our County Data: Pedestrian & Bike Collisions webpage with the latest crash data, including county-specific pedestrian and bicycle collision data from 2016 - 2020 (SWITRS 2016 - 2020/Provisional 2019 - 2020 update as of September, 2021).

As we near two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, agencies are now releasing data on its impact for people walking.

The League of American Bicyclists has released their bi-annual call for applications for their Bicycle Friendly Community Awards. This year’s application period ends September 1 for Communities, October 1 for Universities and October 5 for Businesses.

Improving Walking in the Bay Area

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) recently released a new report, "Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State: 2020 Preliminary Data" that provides an indepth overview of state and national trends in pedestrian traffic fatalities for January - December, 2020.
